This is my Review of Marima’s Creative blog referencing Dead Man’s Dance. https://mebsliterature.art.blog/2019/08/19/blog-5-creative/
The incredible transportive powers of language took me away from ACU library and to the shores of the ocean. Thank you for a great blog Marima !
I empathised greatly with you authors note, it set up your piece of writing and made it more pertinent. The journey that this story takes me on is both joyous though the imagery of land and family, and juxtaposed by upsetting allusions to loss of culture, identity and injustice.
I particularly appreciated the moment of the characters are observing the Governor’s wife and Daughter, and how that moment of mundanity can be so intense and reflective of values and self. How the protagonist quickly averts the attention of the reader and Uncle Bobby (who symbolises culture), she attempts to rectify the fragmentation of unified communities as she encourages Uncle Bobby to tell a story of the “whales”.
The complexity of the characters, including there brother who is caught up in this moment of wander and thus expels his values of culture at that time, is contextually relevant and apparent in societies today.
This blog makes people think about their origins and the amount of culture and history that has been suppressed by colonisation and societal values.
Consistent and thoughtful peer reviews. Well done Victoria !
